Light The Path Design Team Meg Gundlach | February Five Senses

Hi there, Meg here again to share one of my projects from the February 2021 Light The Path prompts. The most fascinating part of participating in an annual workshop is how different your response can be from year to year, even when the prompts remain consistent. In 2020 Theresa structured the February assignments to focus on how your 5 senses allow you to interact with the world around you. When I truly considered this in 2021, I was compelled to tell a series of stories on how interacting with the world now means you need to actively protect and cover nearly all of these elements. What a difference a year makes!

The digital products this month had several options that included all 5 senses, which paired perfectly with the photo prompt. I chose to use the script set and printed each one on a 3×4 piece of vellum. I love the ability to print on vellum for semi-transparent pockets, but I’ve found they are prone to bending and creasing when they are the only piece in the pocket. To avoid this I put a piece of clear acetate in behind the vellum to add stability. In this case the acetate also provided another layer of protection from the back of the staples.

This page should probably come with a warning, because 3×4 is a very intimidating size to print close-ups of your own facial features. So much definition. One of the things I was excited about with the 6×12 size was the opportunity to fold over a 12×12 page for more layers of content. That was ideal for this prompt because it allowed me to include all the photos but they were less in your face (my face? Hahaha). It was also a happy coincidence that the six sections this created were perfect for the 5 senses + a little extra.

At the end of 2019, I made an intentional choice to not document 2020 in 2020 and to instead work on older projects. Wow did that turn out differently than I envisioned. That also means I had not yet told a single pandemic story, which is starting to feel a little strange at this point. Maybe that’s why it was at the front of my mind when I sat down to fill in these cards—it was nice to pull out some of the supplies I had been hoarding and actually use them. I’m a huge fan of having a few basics (like physical and digital stamps) in topical themes that can be mixed and matched with other collections.

I typically try to embrace the ‘moving forward with hope’ attitude that Theresa brings to all things Light The Path, but I gave myself permission to fill out the Currently journal card with brutal honesty. The very purpose of cards like this is documenting the now because things will change. If you’re reluctant to commit to filling this out because you’re afraid you won’t like your answers, that is totally ok. Fill it out now. Fill it out again in a month. Fill it out again in a year. These are little 3×4 check-ins on your progress towards better times.

And that is another month’s worth of prompts in the book. How are you doing friends? I’m so grateful to Theresa for creating this opportunity to really consider how I’m feeling and process some of the things that are just fighting to be released. The invitation to take some aspects that I’ve been avoiding and make something beautiful out of it. It has been a tough road lately. If you are feeling like you are ready for the mental shift from survival mode to healing mode, it is never too late to join us in this workshop. Please feel free to reach out.
