I am so excited to be back this month sharing a little bit about me and my process for this month’s Light The Path prompts. Today, I am sharing the pages for the photography prompt. Taking and then posting selfies was actually one of my first steps to documenting my healing journey. If you’d like to see other pages our Design Team has created using the Light The Path prompts, check this link: 2021 Light The Path Design Team.
Towards the end of 2019 I was in a vehicular collision that deeply impacted my and my family’s life. That experience, and the resulting PTSD, has really changed me. Both inside and out. The internal change was something I first noticed when I saw photos of myself following the accident. That strong, negative reaction to my own photos led me to set a monthly 2020 selfie challenge. Those photos were definitely hard to look at, at first, but have become such a cherished representation of my healing. So much so that I am continuing this personal challenge for 2021 as well.
When it came to documenting my selfies and the photography prompt to accompany it, I was really inspired by the bright rainbows included in the digital kit. Rainbows have a lot of symbolism for me and I wanted a big bright one as the base of my page. For the background, I painted wide brushstrokes with watercolors that coordinated with the kit. I trimmed off a two inch piece from the edge for the opposite page and then layered plain white cardstock over top. I roughed up the edge a little to add some definition to the layer. The numbers from the digital embellishments were perfect for this prompt documenting five things about myself I am proud of.
Part of my journey is accepting who I am now and loving the parts of me that have changed. I included some of those things and the growth and healing they represent. This exercise was very positive for me and went hand in hand with practices I was already working on in my healing.
The facing page has a 2×8 pocket and two 4×4 pockets. I had printed the cards prior to starting and I made the choice to keep the regular card dimensions instead of reprinting to accommodate the square pockets. I layered a few of the 3×4 journal cards for each of the pockets. One for additional journaling about using selfies to document my healing and my 2020 selfie challenge. The other for my photo. I used my favorite selfie from my 2020 photos. I used black and white so the colors would not clash with the beautiful neons from the kit.
In the 2×8 pocket I used the two inch piece I trimmed off the rainbow paper from the other page. These word strips were cut from a 4×6 card in the kit. I really liked the card in the kit but I love the way it looks stacked as well. The sentiment captured some of my feelings so well!
This kit is so bright and cheery and gold embellishments seemed like the perfect match. I added gold washi as another layer on the cards and to the edge of the photography prompt. Under the label on the edge, is a floral sticker that coordinated with my January art journal page. Lastly, a few gold stars to finish it up.
Normally, I am drawn to darker colors, but the bright neons intrigued me. It was so fun to work with this kit! I love that this workshop not only encourages me to tell my story, but also pushes me creatively. It has been so impactful in my healing path. I hope these prompts encourage you to tell your own story and help you in your own journey as well!
