Clique Kits Creative Team | Art Journal Layout With Tehuana Kit

Hi friends and welcome back! Today I have an art journal layout I created for the Clique Kits Creative Team. We are going to bring a failed art journal layout back to life today, using this gorgeous Tehuana kit featuring Frida Kahlo! Have you ever worked with an art journal layout and got into it, only to realize it feels like it’s ruined? That happened to me recently, and I decided that there was surely a way to rescue it and make it into something. If you’d like to see other layouts I’ve done similar to this, check out my link: Art Journal Layouts. Let’s dive right in!

This kit is heavily inspired by the amazing artist Frida Kahlo. I am particularly inspired by her story of surviving an awful accident and going on to make such incredible art. I took this old art journal page that I had given up on, and began this round with a stencil and modeling paste. The stencil is by The Crafter’s Workshop, and resembles some of the background florals on the patterned papers in the kit. Once the paste was dry, I added a layer of gesso, just to tone down that background one more time. It still shows through a little, and when you look at the finished layout you can see the bits of grey back there. Ha! Then I added color. Using Heidi Swapp Shine sprays, I laid down the color with a super wet brush and sprayed more water so that those lovely colors would blend together. The sprays I used are Primrose, Mustard, and Coral. While that dried, I fussy cut my papers and those gorgeous butterflies. They were from the specialty vellum in the kit, from Vicki Boutin’s Fernwood collection.

Adding the embellishments was like adding frosting to your favorite cake. First I stamped a French sentiment and a few florals with black ink. I adhered Frida on the left side, and the smaller floral cut out is on the right, leaving space for my journaling title. I added the butterflies somewhat randomly. The last thing it needed was the title, created using these older puffy alphabets from Pinkfresh Studio.
