Hello my Light the Path friends, Junell here today!! It’s February already and I cannot believe that I’m writing my third blog post for Light the Path. I am learning so much. February’s theme is the Five Senses and in this workshop Theresa discusses how the brain and the body are all about survival. For me that shows up as anxiety and I feel it everywhere. My mind spins round and round and I get headaches and feel my blood pressure go up. In the Inspiration Gallery I share a page all about the anxiety I feel.
Learning new coping mechanisms:
Theresa tells us that we can remind our body and our brain that we are safe and we can do that through something called Grounding Exercises. She takes us through guided medication practices focusing on each of our senses and the things that make us feel safe. For my second project, I created a layout journaling and listing things that made me feel safe and secure and enabled me to self-soothe.
Traci Reed’s designs this month were absolutely divine! I just loved the pink and red color combo.
Documenting as reminders:
On the left side of my spread I selected four 3×4 cards. I used the quote card as a jumping off point. It was a perfect reminder to look for what grounds me. I embellished it a little to bring some of the pattern from the card above it to the bottom. I used rose gold Thickers for the title Safe. (Of course, I was out of A’s, so I used an upside down V and an embellishment that says “firmly grounded” to make my A.)
I used another card to journal about how I’m learning that I have some control over my anxiety.
Identifying the things that calm us:
Don’t we all love currently cards? I added to it though. I included a list of what is currently making me feel safe. Seeing nature, smelling fresh air and fresh coffee, hearing birds chirping and train whistles at night, tasting dark roast coffee, and the feeling of being wrapped in my favorite fleece blanket are what brings me comfort now a days.
For the right side of my layout, I had printed out a picture of my self with my eyes closed on a piece of vellum. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it yet until I looked down at my desk and could see a quote card underneath the vellum. Traci included a quote card that said, “Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak.” Which is perfect for this page, so I printed the card at 8.5×11 and then fussy cut out the words and reattached them to a 6.75×8 white cardstock and layered the vellum picture over it. I love the way it turned out!
This month’s focus on the Five Senses was a great reminder that we do have control over anxiety and all the big feelings we experience. Our senses can guide us to feelings of safety and security if we allow them to. Have you thought about what brings you comfort? What healthy ways do you self-soothe?
