Hey everyone! It is Ashley here sharing my April art journal page for Light the Path. This month’s theme is focused on honoring emotions. This practice in general is rough for me. I tend to acknowledge the things I am feeling but then move on without truly sitting with them and feeling them. The guided meditation was so helpful in untangling and identifying some of those emotions.
For this page, I wanted to document the tangle of emotions I was feeling. To do that I decided to do a pattern in a silhouette shape. First, I found a few colors to represent my feelings. Then I matched those colors with acrylic crafts paints from my stash. To correlate with the elements in the digital kit, I pulled out a stencil that represented waves for me.
Another element from the kit that I really liked was the textured rectangles. To mimic that, I used sponges for adding paint over the stencil. Once dry, I sketched out a rough body shape onto thick cardstock to use as a mask. For the rest of the page, I dry brushed a black and dark purple paint mixture. The color represents another emotion for me as well. Then, I used my fingers to smudge the sharper edges. Once that layer of paint was dry, I outlined the body shape with a white Stabilo pencil.
The last element of this art journal page is an altered quote from Sabrina Ward Harrison. The original direct quote is “Honor your humanness and all of your feelings – the messy ones, the growing pains, the ache – because we can’t have the dark without the light.” I tweaked it to fit what I was feeling and wrote it out on cardstock. Each strip was distressed with the sharp edge of my scissors. Lastly, I used a black Stabilo to add some shadowing to the words for a little more depth and character.
I hope this page could be an inspiration to you. If you want to see a more step by step of my putting this page together, I do have a process video up on my YouTube channel. Lastly, I invite and encourage you to join us in the Light the Path workshop each month.
