Light The Path April 2021
Art Journal Pages
Hi and welcome to the April Art Journal Page for Honor Your Emotions. This month is an important month for acknowledging and sitting with difficult emotions, and follow along to see how my art process is helping me do that this month.
Art has such amazing power to help us release energy, and emotions are stored in the body as emotions. There are so many ways to release that energy: go for a run, scream, cry, sing, create, talk to friends, or even withdraw. Creating is so powerful because it documents moments of time and it allows us to process difficult emotions through art mediums. Plus, we have something to show for it!
I started this layout with two very understated patterned papers in pink and yellow. They are from Heidi Swapp Storyline Chapters and have just been hanging around on my desk from other projects. I adhered those and then gesso’d over them to get the background started.
I then laid down some simple washi tapes, the stars are from Felicity Jane and the triangles are Studio Calico. The stars represent a reminder to myself that I am a rock star. The process of recovery and healing is super hard, but we are doing it! On the other hand, the triangles represent some of the poinky ends that we encounter too. Some days healing feels really prickly and sticky and uncomfortable.
The Julia collection from Felicity Jane featured a stamp set that highlights creatives as a super power, so I was inspired to incorporate some of those images. I had white space on both sides of my page, which was perfect for a bit of black ink. I also used the Pinkfresh/Altenew Celebrate stamp set for the giant florals. I filled those in with a bit of pink ink as well.
Once all of that was dry and done, I added my title. I’ve used the plain chipboard alphabets from Heidi Swapp as a reminder that the events and emotions themselves are somewhat neutral. It is our response to them that is ours to manage. Notice how all of these layers tell so many different pieces of the story!
I encourage you this month to create art that reminds you of how your emotions are guides for you that direct you through the river of your life. They come and go, they are sometimes strong and sometimes apathetic. They tell us what our needs are, and serve as a guide for us. Our work is to make the time to identify our emotions, sit with them, validate those feelings, and allow them to pass through us.
